Phonics is a vital component of our learning in Year 1. It is fundamental in getting the children to read confidently and accurately. At school, we would usually have a daily 30 minute phonics session in order to teach and practise the skills needed to decode, segment and read fluently. Therefore, it is imperative that this is still practised as much as possible whilst at home.

Phonics Play is a website we use regularly at school, with lots of great interactive games which can be used as quick time fillers or as part of a lesson. Phonics Play are now offering free access to all of the resources on their website to allow children to continue practising at home. Most children in Year 1 are working at phase 5 for phonics, however it is still important to continually revise and revisit phases 2, 3 and 4 as well.
