Welcome to Year 5!
PE Days - PE is on a Tuesday afternoon (Mr Kenneford) and a Thursday afternoon (Miss Marshall). This half term the children will be learning gymnastics and dance. A full PE kit should be brought in at the beginning of the week and left in school. A list of the full PE kit can be found on the website under Parents > School Uniform.
Homework - Book homework is set every Friday and is due back the following Wednesday. This may consist of Maths fluency (yellow book), SPAG and/or reading comprehension. In addition to this, online MyMaths homework is set every week on a Friday and is due in the following Friday. Later in the term, this will also include SPAG.com homework. Children will record their homework in their homework diaries when set and therefore need to bring these to school each day.
Music homework - Children will be given weekly music homework and must practise what they have learned in school.
Spellings - Weekly spellings are given out on a Monday and the children will be tested on these words on the following Friday. Year 5 have spelling books to record and practise these spelling words. The children will need to bring this to school each day.
Reading Books - Reading books and records should be brought to school daily. We encourage children to read every night to support their comprehension. Please ensure that whenever you read a book, you comment and sign so we know if it has been read or not.
English - Our core text for this half term is 'Leon and the Place Between' by Angela McAllister. We will use this text to build our vocabulary and analyse literary features to develop our reading comprehension. We will also use this story to write a diary entry, character and setting descriptions and an adventure story. We will focus on the grammar features relevant to the genres which include descriptive writing, prepositional phrases, inverted commas, paragraphs and more. Later in the half term, will will be writing a biography as part of Black History Month.
Maths - This half term we will be focusing on Place Value. This includes numbers up to a million, comparing and ordering numbers, rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000, counting in powers of 10 and negative numbers.
Science - This half term our Science topic is Earth and Space. We will be looking at the planets in our solar system, the sun and the moon, how they move and analysing scientific evidence.
Music - This term, Year 5 are learning to play the J-Sax. Mrs Jaggers will come in every Monday morning to teach the children how to read, play and begin to compose their own music. Children are expected to take home their instrument as they will receive weekly music to practise what they have been learning in school.
Geography - This term the children in Year 5 will focus on Brazil. They will use atlases to locate Brazil and the other South American countries. They will study the human and physical features of this country and look at what Brazil is famous for.
Art - This half term, as part of the Brazil topic, Year 5 will study the artist Romero Britto - a Brazilian neo-pop artist. They will research and analyse his work before planning, creating and evaluating their own Britto inspired work!
