Year 5

Mrs Strong

Welcome to Year 5!

Key Information

PE Days - PE is on a Tuesday afternoon. A full PE kit should be brought in at the beginning of the week and left in school. A list of the full PE kit can be found on the website under Parents > School Uniform

Year 5 will also be swimming on a Friday morning.  The correct swimming kit should be brought in each week.  Pupils should not wear jewellery which has to be removed for PE and swimming.

Homework - English Comprehension Book homework is set every Friday and is due back the following Wednesday.  Online homework is also set every Friday to be completed by the following Friday. In addition to this, online MyMaths homework is set every week on a Friday and is due in the following Friday. Children will record their homework in their homework diaries when set and therefore need to bring these to school each day.

Spellings - Weekly spellings are shared in a Spelling Lesson every Monday and the children will be tested on these words in the form of a dictation or spelling test every Friday. Year 5 have a section in the weekly pages of their diaries to record these spelling words. The children will need to bring their diaries to school each day.

Reading Books - Accelerated Reading books and reading records should be brought into school daily.  We encourage children to read every night to support their comprehension and children should read to an adult at least three times a week. When you listen to your child read, please ensure you comment and sign in their reading record. The children will also be using this to keep a record of the pages they have read in their books.

Our Learning

Autumn 2

English - Our core text for this half term is 'Journey to Jo-burg' by Beverley Naidoo. We will use this text to build our vocabulary and analyse literary features to develop our reading comprehension. We will also use this story as inspiration for writing compositions and grammar activities.

Maths - In Maths this term, we will be covering the following topics: statistics, number (multiplication and division) and measurement (area and perimeter).

Science - We will be exploring the big question 'What is the cycle of life?'. Our science lessons will involve analysing the life cycles of animals and plants.
